Support for people with diabetes in St Helens

In 2025/2026, one of our key priorities was to better understand the availability, accessibility, and effectiveness of diabetes support services in St Helens. To support this, we conducted a survey focused specifically on people’s experiences to help us identify gaps, improve services, and advocate for better resources.

We were aware of the high prevalence of diabetes in St Helens and wanted to give local people the opportunity to share their experiences of accessing support and care. To do this, we developed a survey that explored a range of issues, including how easy it is to arrange blood tests, access support from a diabetes nurse, and obtain referrals for further investigations when needed.

We worked closely with the Public Health team and local contacts at Diabetes UK to reach people who may have been interested in taking part and sharing their experiences. The feedback received highlighted significant variation in both the quality and accessibility of diabetes support services across the borough.

The insight gathered through this survey has helped us identify what is working well, as well as areas where improvements could be made. By sharing these findings, we aim to support health and care services in delivering more timely, effective and person-centred diabetes care for local people.
