Reducing suicide in St Helens

Reducing suicide in St Helens was one of our most important priorities for 2025–2026. Behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a story, which is why this work matters so deeply to us.

To better understand the experiences of our community, Healthwatch St Helens staff and forum members came together to design a survey shaped by real questions and real concerns. We were grateful to receive 50 responses from people who shared their experiences, thoughts, and ideas with honesty and courage.

Our recent consultation, focused on those who have been affected by suicide, has given a powerful insight into what support truly means to people during some of the most difficult times in their lives.

The findings from this work highlight not only the challenges faced, but also the kinds of support that people feel would make a real difference—support that is compassionate, accessible, and understanding.

This report brings together those voices and experiences. It will help guide future improvements and ensure that support in St Helens is shaped by the people who need it most.
